Health Science

Health Science 1 and Health Science 2 are required for graduation from Minneapolis Public Schools. Health Science courses are designed to enable students to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy and informed decisions for a lifetime. Students explore a broad range of health topics that relate to one of the following priority health areas as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health Science 2 is designed to enable students to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy and informed decisions for a lifetime. In Health Science 2 students explore abroad range of health topics that relate to one of the following priority health areas as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • nutrition, dietary practices and physical fitness
  • prevention and reduction of tobacco use
  • prevention of drug and alcohol use
  • intentional and unintentional injuries
  • HIV/AIDS/sexually transmitted infections
  • unintentional pregnancies

The topics of study include safety and first aid, CPR and AED training, prevention of abuse in relationships, asthma, depression and suicide prevention,abstinence and contraception, unintentional pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, understanding grief and death, the influence of media,culture, and technology on health related issues, and selecting, financing, and accessing community health services.

Prerequisite: Health Science 1
