The mission of social studies is to create and deliver a rich and rigorous curriculum that develops the social understanding, critical thinking, and civic efficacy necessary for making responsible decisions in the 21st century.

Satisfactory completion of this course meets the state 9-12 social studies standards and credit requirements for geography. Through mapping labs, simulations, case studies, geographic investigations, and research, students will learn how to use the tools of geography and geographic information to make inferences, form conclusions, and support decisions as they explore:

  • The influences geography in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia,
  • The influences and effects of geography in Central Asia,Monsoon Asia, Oceania, and Antarctica
  • How where we live influences how we live
  • The nature, the causes, and consequences of urban sprawl
  • The causes and effects of migration
  • The use of global resource
  • How humans influence the environment and how they are influenced by it
  • The competing interests over natural areas and natural resources
  • National self-interest and international cooperation
  • The causes and effects of changing populations
  • The relationship between geography and culture
